QUESTIONS ABOUT VIRTUAL PHYSIOTHERAPY
  • What is a virtual physiotherapy visit?

A virtual physiotherapy session is similar to a Facetime or Zoom video call, but we use specialized software and assessment techniques to accomplish physiotherapy goals. This software may help us to measure your movement online, stream exercises and instruct you to understand how much, often, and how hard you should do that exercise, educate you on your injury and more. The assessment techniques help us coach you to to assist us in gaining the information we normally would ourselves in a face-to-face visit.

  • Who pays for online physiotherapy?

You can always pay for a visit privately, but some funders will cover virtual physiotherapy as well. During COVID, nearly all funders paid for virtual physiotherapy sessions, however, since then the rules have changed for many of these insurance companies. Please check with your insurance as to whether they will cover a virtual physiotherapy visit and what requirements they may impose on the session.

  • How much does it cost?

Costs are the same as for a standard visit. Please call or email our office for current rates.

  • How long does it take?

It depends, but treatment sessions are usually between 30 and 45 minutes. As you can imagine, visits might take a little longer than a physical visit due to the fact we are doing things through the technology.

  • What conditions is an online physiotherapy session appropriate for?

Telehealth has been shown to be effective for the assessment and treatment of conditions where the primary therapy goals can be achieved through progressive exercises, functional rehabilitation activity, education, self-mobilization, self-management, and monitoring.

  • Do I have to be a technical genius?

Not at all. While our software is far more secure and private than Facetime or Skype, its ease of use is about the same. Typically, all you have to do is click a link from our appointment email.

  • Is it effective and backed by research?

Yes! FusionPhysio has a strong background in the evidence-base for virtual physiotherapy. Of course, not all conditions are suited for this service as some physical therapies must be provided in-person. However, often therapy that is primarily exercise based (such as surgical rehabilitation) can be handled well with a virtual visit.

  • What physiotherapists are qualified to do this?

Due to the limitations of remote care, there are some considerations here. A physiotherapist needs to be thoroughly familiar with how to take an injury history and needs to have seen that history many times. For this reason, we only use physiotherapists that have at least 5-years of experience.

  • Is it safe?

Yes. The physiotherapist is required to ensure that an appropriate level of support and assistance is available to address your needs and ensure your safety and that you agree to the involvement of this assistance. We do this by making sure the environment and available assistance is suitable to the planned session activities.

  • Are there other benefits?

For certain situations, clients have said they actually preferred online care to physical attendance at a facility. In the digital world, we are able to use some tools such as video exercise and quick reference tools that are extremely helpful to some clients in certain situations. Additionally, clients who live at a distance from our clinic can save themselves the time and costs associated with a physical visit.

  • Is it private and secure?

Yes. Privacy and security is one reason we do not use products such as Facetime or Zoom. Our EMR virtual visit software which uses full end-to-end encryption and Canadian servers.
